'Green cleaning' is a term that has been coined to describe a trend away from chemically-reactive and toxic cleaning products which contain various toxic chemicals some of which emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) causing respiratory and dermatological problems among other adverse effects.

Green cleaning can also describe the way residential and industrial cleaning products are manufactured, packaged and distributed. If the manufacturing process is environmentally-friendly and the products are biodegradable, then the term 'green' or eco-friendly may apply.

After exposure to chemicals such as cleaning products, traces of these chemicals can be found in every organ in the body. About one percent of the nation’s trash is made up of household hazardous waste. That small percentage equals 3.36 million tons, an average of 60-100 pounds per household at any given time. More than 1.4 million Americans exposed to household chemicals were referred to poison control centers in 2001. 824,000 of these exposure victims were children under the age of 6. Household chemicals cause frequent fires in dumpsters and trash collection trucks, and injuries to trash workers.
A New York sanitation worker was killed in 1998 when a hazardous liquid in household trash sprayed his face and clothes.
